The Truth About Testosterone Therapy for Women: What You Need to Know in 2025

Can Hormones Protect Your Brain? New Research Shows Testosterone May Lower Dementia Risk.
As we age, many of us worry about maintaining not just physical health, but also our brain health. Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease affect millions worldwide, and women—especially postmenopausal women—are nearly twice as likely as men to develop these conditions. But exciting new research suggests that hormones, particularly testosterone, may play a protective role in keeping our minds sharp.
A major new study, recently published in Clinical Endocrinology, examined over 300,000 adults and followed them for more than 12 years to explore how sex hormones like testosterone affect the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s. The findings are eye-opening:
✅ Higher levels of free testosterone were linked to a significantly lower risk of dementia in both men and postmenopausal women.
✅ In postmenopausal women specifically, those with healthier testosterone levels had a 16-24% lower risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s compared to those with lower levels.
✅ Conversely, higher levels of a protein called SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin), which reduces available testosterone, were associated with a higher risk of dementia.
In simple terms? More available testosterone appears to protect the brain—while lower levels may contribute to cognitive decline.
Why This Matters for You
Hormone levels naturally decline with age, and for women, this happens even more dramatically after menopause. Many common symptoms—such as fatigue, low libido, mood changes, and brain fog—are often tied to these hormonal shifts.
Now, we’re learning that these changes may also increase the risk of serious cognitive diseases later in life. But here’s the good news: safe, medically-guided hormone optimization may not only help you feel better today — it may also help safeguard your future brain health.
